The IPL 2026 mini auction got off to a dramatic start in Abu Dhabi, with big names, surprise snubs and intense bidding wars setting the tone for the day. From record-breaking overseas buys to unexpected unsold players, the opening sets offered plenty for fans of all ages to follow easily.

Cameron Green steals the spotlight

Australia’s all-rounder Cameron Green, who entered the auction as a specialist batter, predictably triggered the first major bidding war on Tuesday. The contest began between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals before the Chennai Super Kings also joined in.

In the end, it was KKR who emerged victorious, securing Green for a massive ₹25.20 crore. This made him the most expensive overseas player in the history of the Indian Premier League auctions.

David Miller becomes first pick

Despite the frenzy around Green, the first player to be sold at the IPL 2026 auction was South Africa’s powerful batter David Miller. In a surprise move, the Delhi Capitals picked him up for his base price of ₹2 crore, with no bidding competition.

Big names go unsold early

There were a few unexpected moments as well. Indian batters Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw went unsold in the opening set, which raised eyebrows. However, both players are still expected to find teams later in the day.

Other well-known names such as Jake Fraser-McGurk and Devon Conway also failed to attract bids in the capped batters set.

Venkatesh Iyer’s price drops sharply

Another anticipated bidding war arrived in Set 2, which featured capped all-rounders. India’s Venkatesh Iyer, who fetched ₹23.75 crore last year, drew interest from four franchises this time.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru eventually outbid Kolkata Knight Riders, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants to sign him for ₹7 crore, a significantly lower price compared to the previous season.

Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants for his base price of ₹2 crore, while several others in this set went unsold.

Wicketkeepers see mixed fortunes

Kolkata Knight Riders, who are keen on strengthening their wicketkeeper-batter options, chose not to bid for England’s Jamie Smith, who remained unsold. Instead, KKR signed New Zealand’s Finn Allen for his base price of ₹2 crore.

South Africa’s Quinton de Kock made a return to the Mumbai Indians for ₹1 crore. England’s Ben Duckett was bought by Delhi Capitals for ₹2 crore, while several others including KS Bharat, Johnny Bairstow and Rahmanullah Gurbaz went unsold.

Bowlers and uncapped players to watch

Among bowlers, big bids are expected later in the auction for players such as Ravi Bishnoi, Anrich Nortje and Matheesha Pathirana. Uncapped players like Auqib Nabi and Under-19 batter Abhigyan Kundu could also spark interesting bidding battles.

Teams, slots and money in play

Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are expected to be the busiest teams as the auction progresses, with both franchises holding large purses and several slots to fill.

In total, 369 players are set to go under the hammer. The 10 IPL teams need to fill 77 slots, with a combined purse of ₹237.55 crore available.
