Indian cricket awaits Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement today, with selection committee facing tough calls.

Indian cricket fans are on edge as the BCCI prepares for the highly anticipated India Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement in Mumbai on Tuesday. The Senior Men’s Selection Committee will meet at the board headquarters to decide the 15-member squad, with captain Suryakumar Yadav and top selectors in attendance. The announcement, due in the afternoon, has triggered intense speculation about batting and bowling choices that could define India’s campaign in the UAE from September 9 to 28.
Captaincy settled, but batting dilemmas remain
Suryakumar Yadav, having cleared his fitness test, is widely expected to lead the side. However, debate continues around Test captain Shubman Gill’s place in the T20 setup. Despite consistent returns in longer formats and the IPL, Gill may miss out as the management looks to back in-form T20 specialists such as Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson. For now, Gill is believed to be in the long-term plans but not a frontline option for the Asia Cup 2025 India squad.
Middle-order and wicketkeeping calls
The selection committee is also considering recalls for Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma, both absent from T20 internationals since Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach in mid-2024. Iyer’s experience in anchoring the middle order could prove useful on slower UAE surfaces, though his return might come at the expense of Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh. Jitesh, after a standout IPL season, is tipped to challenge Dhruv Jurel for the reserve wicketkeeper role.
Bumrah’s return and bowling balance
Jasprit Bumrah, recovering from a minor knee concern, is expected to return to the fold. Mohammed Siraj, who has managed a heavy workload in recent months, may be rested. Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana are being discussed as seam options, while Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Varun Chakravarthy could feature as spinners suited to Gulf conditions.
Group stage challenge ahead
India have been drawn with Pakistan, UAE and Oman. They will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10 in Dubai, followed by the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 14.
