Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has returned to the Indian squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, subject to fitness clearance, as selectors announced a 15-member group featuring several young players set to travel for the Asian Games later this month.

Afghanistan will host India for the three T20Is on September 13, 15 and 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The squad largely mirrors India's contingent for the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, with Shreyas Iyer named captain and Tilak Varma appointed vice-captain.

Bumrah back after injury lay-off

The biggest development from the squad announcement is Bumrah's return after a knee injury kept him out of India's recent assignments.

The fast bowler sustained the injury during India's ODI series in England and subsequently missed the team's two-Test series in Sri Lanka. His inclusion in the Afghanistan series, however, remains subject to fitness clearance.

Three other players, all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar, along with fast bowler Harshit Rana, have also been picked subject to fitness clearance.

Young players retain their place

The squad includes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, giving India multiple options at the top of the order and behind the stumps.

Shivam Dube, Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy form part of the all-round options, while Washington Sundar's availability will depend on his fitness status.

India's spin department includes Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi, alongside Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

The pace attack will feature Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, with two of the three, Bumrah and Rana, awaiting fitness clearance.
