Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has shared his thoughts on the ODI futures of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as the duo prepares for a return to international action in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia beginning October 19. This will be their first appearance in Indian colours since announcing their retirements from Test cricket earlier this year.

Speaking to Fox Sports, Shastri expressed confidence in the pair’s continued value to India’s white-ball setup. "(Virat Kohli is) a master chaser, and Rohit is explosive at the top. They feel they've got enough cricket in them," he said. He emphasised that their international longevity will hinge on several factors, including fitness and passion for the game. “With their experience, it’ll come in very handy,” he added.

On speculation surrounding their participation in the 2027 World Cup, Shastri advised a cautious, short-term approach. “I would say take it one series at a time. It's still a long way to go.”

Highlighting the players’ autonomy, Shastri remarked: “If they're not enjoying it, if the form is not good, you never know. They might pull the plug themselves.”
