New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a touching tribute to outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar, commending his strong conviction and steadfast dedication to prioritising the team's needs above all else.

Gambhir emphasised the three ICC silverware victories India secured throughout Agarkar's stewardship and expressed gratitude for his service, remarking that history will judge his contribution favourably whilst wishing him well in his future undertakings.

Agarkar's tenure as chairman of the BCCI senior men's selection panel formally concluded on Tuesday, with the Indian cricket board inviting applications to fill the single vacancy created on the committee. Having assumed leadership in July 2023, Agarkar finished his term on October 4 and opted against seeking a contract extension.

“Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always. I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. My heartfelt wishes for your future endeavours!” Gambhir posted on X.

Throughout the stretch between 2023 and 2026, the Indian men's team claimed three major international titles: the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2024, the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2026.

Former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has stepped in as interim chief selector, leading the selection committee meeting on Tuesday to finalise India's squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.
