Lahore: A group of 21 former international cricket captains has issued an urgent appeal to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, requesting proper medical care and humane treatment for the jailed former Pakistan captain and prime minister, Imran Khan. The signatories include Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and Dilip Vengsarkar, alongside international icons such as Allan Border, Greg Chappell, and Sir Clive Lloyd. The recent letter represents an expansion of a previous appeal made six months ago by 14 captains, with seven additional leaders now adding their voices. Emphasising their shared history on the pitch, the former rivals noted that their intervention transcends borders and politics, appealing simply for basic decency and dignity for the 73-year-old World Cup winner who has been incarcerated since 2023.

Concerns Over Supreme Court Order Compliance

The renewed plea was triggered by recent developments surrounding Khan's health and an alleged failure by authorities to adhere to judicial directives. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ordered that Khan be transferred from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a thorough examination by a medical board. This board was meant to include his personal physicians and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan. However, the former captains highlighted that the hospital stay lasted only a few hours. Khan was examined by a state-appointed team rather than the court-mandated board, swiftly declared medically fit, and returned to custody before his personal doctors could evaluate him. In response, Dr Uzma Khan has initiated contempt proceedings, accusing government officials of wilful disobedience of the Supreme Court's mandate.

The Three Key Requests

Without seeking to interfere in Pakistan’s domestic legal proceedings, the cricket veterans outlined three specific appeals in their letter. The captains first requested that the medical board directed by the Supreme Court be permitted to conduct a full and independent assessment of Khan's health, particularly addressing alarming reports of vision loss in his right eye. Secondly, they urged the Pakistani government to honour the weekly family visits that were recently reinstated by the court, demanding they take place without administrative delays or interruptions. Finally, the signatories asked that whatever treatment is recommended following an independent medical assessment be provided to Khan without delay. The former captains concluded their letter by stating that ensuring a court-ordered medical process is fully completed is not a controversial request, but a matter of universal fairness.
