Melbourne: Cricket Australia (CA) is open to the possibility of staging an Ashes Test in India in the future, although there are no immediate plans to pursue the idea, chief executive Todd Greenberg has said.

The development comes after CA decided to take the opening match of this year's Big Bash League to Chennai, underlining the growing cricketing ties between Australia and India.

Speaking on the BBC's Stumped podcast, Greenberg said Cricket Australia enjoys strong relationships with both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), creating opportunities to explore new initiatives.

"Our relationship with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) but also the BCCI is very strong, and clearly there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas," Greenberg said.

While emphasising that no formal plans are currently in place, the CA chief said the idea remains one the governing body would be willing to consider.

"It's not something we're currently planning, but it would be certainly open to consideration. I think Test cricket between us, England and India is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it," he added.

Greenberg also pointed out that the increasingly crowded international cricket calendar poses a significant challenge to introducing new marquee events involving multiple boards.

"The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there's only 365 days in a schedule and we probably need another month or two (to) generate some of the content that we're trying to," he said.

England are scheduled to host the next Ashes series in 2027, while Cricket Australia continues to explore ways of expanding the global appeal of the sport through new events and overseas fixtures. (PTI)
