Mumbai Indians have named former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 campaign. Announced on Saturday, October 24, the appointment marks a major transition at the helm of the five-time champions. Pollard steps into the hot seat to replace outgoing head coach Mahela Jayawardene.

A trusted champion takes charge

For the past few seasons, Pollard served as the team's batting coach. Now, the management has elevated the 39-year-old veteran to the top post, ensuring continuity from within their own ranks.

The franchise highlighted this transition in an official statement:

"Mumbai Indians are pleased to announce the elevation of Kieron Pollard to Head Coach, extending one of the most enduring player-to-coach associations in cricket".

They added that his deep understanding of their setup will guide the squad forward:

"Pollard brings an exceptional understanding of Mumbai Indians, its culture and the demands of competing at the highest level. Having been part of T20 cricket’s evolution, he brings valuable insight into the game’s changing dynamics, tactical demands and increasingly competitive landscape. His journey with MI as a player and, more recently, as Batting Coach gives him a unique perspective on the franchise’s success and a strong foundation to lead the team into its next chapter".

The club further noted that his appointment reflects their commitment to building on team legacy, developing fresh talent, strengthening team culture, and pursuing excellence on and off the field, with leadership rooted in MI's most successful years alongside the ambition to shape its future.

From a raw 22-year-old to an MI mainstay

Pollard’s journey in blue and gold began sixteen years ago. Mumbai Indians bought him ahead of the 2010 season when he was an energetic 22-year-old. From that moment until his final IPL appearance in 2022, Pollard wore no other jersey in the tournament.

Fans affectionately nicknamed him 'Polly', embracing him as one of their own. Beyond the IPL, the Trinidadian travelled the globe playing in prominent franchise competitions, turning out for Barbados Tridents, Adelaide Strikers, Dhaka Dynamites, Melbourne Renegades, and Trinbago Knight Riders. Even earlier this year, his loyalty to the brand continued as he turned out for MI New York in Major League Cricket.

On the international stage, Pollard rose to become captain of the West Indies white-ball side. One of his most celebrated career highlights arrived when he etched his name into history by smashing six sixes in a single over against Sri Lanka.

The numbers that built a powerhouse

On the pitch, Pollard was a classic match-winner — a hard-hitting right-handed batter and a deceptive right-arm medium pacer who gave everything in the field.

Across 189 IPL matches for Mumbai Indians, Pollard piled up 3,412 runs at an explosive strike rate of 147.32 and an average of 28.67. He hammered 16 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 87 not out against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Whenever the skipper threw him the ball, he delivered breakthroughs. Bowling in 107 innings, Pollard took 69 wickets with an average of 31.59, a strike rate of 21.57, and an economy rate of 8.79, without bowling a maiden over. His personal best bowling figures in an MI jersey remain an impressive 4/44.

Voices from the camp as a new chapter begins

Expressing his gratitude, Pollard spoke warmly of his long-standing bond with the franchise, the squad, and the passionate Mumbai supporters known as the Paltan.

"It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians," Pollard said. "MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold. I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate".

Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita Ambani echoed that sentiment, welcoming the all-rounder into his newest leadership responsibility:

"Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family," she said. "As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach. Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter".

The big challenge waiting in the dugout

While Mumbai Indians remain joint-record five-time champions, silverware has eluded them in recent seasons. Their last IPL championship arrived back in 2020, meaning seven seasons have passed without a title.

Ending this seven-season dry spell stands as the central challenge facing Pollard as head coach. Having shared in MI’s golden era as a player, the Paltan will now look to Pollard to bring that same winning touch from behind the boundary line.
