Alathur is in focus in the Lok Sabha poll results 2024 as it stands as the sole constituency where an LDF candidate, K Radhakrishnan has maintained a steady lead. As of 2 PM on Tuesday, Radhakrishnan has a majority by 20121 votes to his closest contender, UDF’s Ramya Haridas who has secured 290806 votes.
What conspired in Alathur? The first factor is that Alathur is a communist party stronghold where the party has a considerable presence and influence. However, it must be noted that this was also the place where the infamous Karuvannur bank scam that involved CPM leaders took place. Yet, the people seem to favour the LDF once again.
The primary reason for this is the personna that K Radhakrishnan has. He is a people’s leader through and through, with a political career that has largely remained free of conspiracies and corruption charges. When he took up the role of the Devaswom Minister, murmurs were heard of a non-brahmanical politician taking up the post. This quickly died down owing to his intricate handling of the portfolio.
Ramya Haridas always entertains the crowd with her beautiful voice and renditions but has failed to sway majority emotion, election trends indicate. Reports say that Ramya’s groundwork in the constituency was not up to the mark and she is viewed as a leader who has failed to prudent use the trust people placed on her. Despite winning from Alathur in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and being a candidate hand-picked by congress supremo Rahul Gandhi, Haridas fell short when it came to creating an impact as an MP.
Haridas had won a majority of 1,58,968 seats in the 2019 Lok sabha elections against CPM candidate P.K Biju. The trends so far in the 2024 poll results however, do not seem to be in Ramya’s favor.
