Roberta Esposito has been identified by authorities as the suspect in the fatal shooting at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on February 16, 2026. The gunfire during a school hockey game left three people dead, including the suspect, and several others critically injured.
Police said Esposito was born Robert Dorgan (also reported as Robert Dugan in initial accounts) and later went by the name Roberta Esposito. Authorities confirmed the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

What Happened At The Arena?
The shooting occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. during a boys’ hockey game between Coventry/Johnston and Blackstone Valley High School teams. According to officials, shots were fired from the stands behind the Blackstone Valley bench.
Law enforcement responding to the scene found two individuals dead inside the arena, including the suspected shooter. A third victim later died at the hospital. Three others remain in critical condition and are being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.
Police described the incident as a “targeted event” that may have stemmed from a possible family dispute. However, authorities have not released full details, citing the ongoing investigation.
Official Response
Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed during a press conference that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed condolences, stating the state was “grieving again” and urged residents in need of emotional support to call 988.
The FBI’s Boston Division is assisting local authorities in the investigation and has pledged support as more details emerge.
Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of the victims pending family notification. Officials continue to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
