Miami: US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has signed an executive order aimed at removing "transgender ideology" from the US military. The move, which could be a significant blow to LGBTQ rights, was discussed during a Republican congressional retreat in Miami.

"To ensure that we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military," Trump stated, listing it as one of the "four new executive orders" he intends to sign related to military policies.

Transgender Americans have faced fluctuating policies regarding their ability to serve in the military. Under former President Barack Obama, the US military lifted its ban on transgender troops in 2016, allowing them to serve openly. The policy also permitted transgender individuals to begin joining the military by 2017.

However, when Trump took office, he sought to reverse the policy, citing concerns that transgender service members were disruptive, costly, and negatively affected military readiness and morale. His administration postponed the implementation of the policy but ultimately decided to reinstate the ban, drawing sharp criticism from rights groups.

After Joe Biden succeeded Trump in 2021, he quickly moved to reverse the ban, restoring the Obama-era policy and allowing transgender Americans to serve openly once again. Despite this, Trump has vowed to overturn these changes if elected for a second term, promising to "get transgender out of the military" as part of his broader agenda to roll back transgender rights.

Impact on military recruitment, readiness

Though the number of transgender service members in the US military is relatively small, with estimates suggesting around 15,000 out of over two million service members, Trump's move to dismiss them would further reduce the size of the military. This comes at a time when the US is already struggling to recruit new personnel.

Lloyd Austin, the outgoing US Defense Secretary under Biden, appeared to criticise Trump’s stance in his farewell address earlier this month. He said, “Any military that turns away qualified patriots who are eager to serve is just making itself smaller and weaker.”
