Defending the aircraft gift from Qatar, Trump stated, “It’s not for me — it’s for the U.S. Air Force

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at an NBC journalist during a tense exchange at the White House on Wednesday, following a question regarding the Pentagon's recent acceptance of a Boeing 747 from Qatar to be modified for potential use as a temporary Air Force One.
The heated moment occurred during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, where Trump accused the reporter of deflecting from more significant global issues, including what he described as "violence and racist laws against white farmers" in South Africa.
“What are you talking about? … What does this have to do with the Qatari jet?” Trump snapped. “They are giving the United States Air Force a jet, and it’s a great thing. We’re talking about other serious issues, and NBC is trying to distract. You are a terrible reporter. You’re not smart enough to be doing this job.”
He went further, slamming NBC and its parent company’s CEO, Brian Roberts, suggesting that both should be investigated. “They ought to be investigated. They are a disgrace in how they run that network. No more questions from you,” Trump added.
Defending the aircraft gift from Qatar, Trump stated, “It’s not for me — it’s for the U.S. Air Force. Qatar has given a Boeing 747, and it’s a very generous gift. They also invested $5.1 trillion in addition to the aircraft.”
According to a CNN report citing a U.S. Defence Department spokesperson, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth accepted the aircraft from the Qatari government. The plane, once extensively modified for security and mission requirements, is expected to temporarily serve as Air Force One until newly commissioned presidential aircraft, currently delayed, are delivered.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the transfer, emphasising that it complies with U.S. laws and that the Department of Defence would ensure the aircraft is fully equipped for its intended presidential role.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump reiterated that the jet was not a personal gift, but rather a donation to the U.S. government. “The Boeing 747 is being given to the United States Air Force/Department of Defence, NOT TO ME!” he wrote. “It is a gift from a nation, Qatar, that we have successfully defended for many years.”
The aircraft, estimated to be worth around $400 million, was reportedly offered by Qatar’s royal family and will help bridge the gap until the new Air Force One jets, currently behind schedule, are ready for deployment.
