Seoul: Two people were killed and at least 18 others were injured on Thursday when a truck ploughed through an outdoor market in Bucheon, a city located just west of Seoul, South Korea, officials said.

According to local fire authorities, the light truck sped out of control for nearly 150 metres before crashing into a row of shops at the traditional market. The incident caused panic among vendors and shoppers as emergency teams rushed to the scene to assist the wounded and clear the debris.

Police have detained the driver, a man in his 60s, for questioning. Officials confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. During interrogation, the driver reportedly claimed that the vehicle suddenly accelerated, causing him to lose control.

Investigation underway

Emergency officials told reporters that before the collision, the truck appeared to have reversed for about 28 metres before surging forward into the crowded market area.

Bucheon, situated roughly 20 kilometres west of central Seoul, is part of the densely populated Seoul metropolitan region. Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
