Washington: The United States issued another worldwide security caution on Monday, July 20 (Tuesday, July 21 in India), warning its citizens to exercise increased vigilance as tensions in the Middle East continue to fuel an uncertain global security environment.

The advisory, issued by the US Department of State, comes just two days after Washington released a worldwide travel caution linked to escalating tensions involving Iran. The latest alert says the security situation remains complex and carries the risk of sudden escalation, prompting renewed guidance for Americans both within and outside the Middle East.

Travel disruptions and security risks highlighted

The State Department advised Americans currently in the Middle East to remain alert and prepare for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and wider travel disruptions. It urged US citizens to closely monitor security alerts issued by American embassies and consulates, follow local authorities, and stay updated with the latest news.

Americans outside the Middle East were advised to reconsider travel to and through the region until the security situation improves.

The advisory also warned that US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted. It said Iran and groups that support Iran could target additional US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and its citizens around the world.

State Department advises travellers to stay informed

The department encouraged Americans to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest security updates. It also asked travellers to follow the US Department of State – Security Updates for US Citizens WhatsApp channel and @TravelGov on X for real-time alerts.

Before travelling, US citizens were urged to review the latest travel advisories, destination-specific guidance and recent security alerts available on the State Department's travel website.
