Karachi: Celebratory gunfire during Independence Day festivities turned deadly in Karachi, with three people -- including a senior citizen and an 8-year-old girl -- losing their lives, and more than 60 others sustaining gunshot wounds, Geo News has reported.

The tragic incidents occurred in various parts of the city, with the young girl fatally struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad. Another victim, a man identified as Stephen, was killed in Korangi. Rescue officials said dozens were injured across the city due to "reckless" aerial firing.

Authorities strongly condemned the dangerous practice, urging the public to commemorate Independence Day in safer and more responsible ways. Police have launched an investigation and vowed strict action against individuals involved in aerial firing.

The fatal celebrations come against the backdrop of alarming gun violence in Karachi. According to a report by ARY News, at least 42 people, including five women, were killed in shooting incidents across the city in January alone. A further 233 individuals, also including five women, were injured.
