Amid swirling rumours about a potential divorce between former U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, the former president has publicly shut down the speculation with a heartfelt birthday post to his wife.
In a post shared on social media, Barack Obama celebrated Michelle, calling her "the love of my life." He wrote, “Happy birthday to the love of my life, Michelle Obama. You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life's adventures with you. Love you!” The message comes as a response to increasing online chatter fueled by Michelle Obama's recent absence from two high-profile public events.
What sparked the speculation?
The divorce rumours began circulating after Michelle Obama chose not to attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump set on January 20, 2025. Traditionally, former first ladies attend the inauguration ceremonies alongside their husbands, but Michelle's absence raised eyebrows. Her office confirmed that former President Barack Obama would attend, but did not provide a reason for Michelle’s absence.
This was the second time in recent weeks that Michelle had skipped a public event involving Trump. She also did not accompany Barack Obama to the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter earlier in January, citing a scheduling conflict and choosing to remain in Hawaii on an extended holiday vacation.
Her absence at both events sparked a wave of speculation on social media, with users questioning whether the Obamas were facing marital problems.
However, some observers pointed out that Michelle's absence could have more to do with her political stance than her personal life. She has been vocal about her disdain for Trump, even writing in her 2018 memoir 'Becoming' that she had never forgiven him for propagating the false claim that her husband was not a U.S. citizen. According to sources close to the Obamas, Michelle’s decision to skip the events was deliberate and reflective of her convictions.
A source familiar with Michelle's approach to public appearances explained, “She’s never been fake and she’s never been phoney. She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up.” The source added that Michelle’s absence was a clear statement, particularly about Trump, with whom she has a strained relationship.
Barack and Michelle Obama's relationship
Barack and Michelle Obama first met in 1989 when Michelle was a senior advisor at the Sidley Austin law firm in Chicago. Their relationship quickly blossomed, and the couple married in 1992. Over the years, Michelle has opened up about their marital challenges, but also about the perseverance and mutual respect that have allowed them to overcome difficulties together. The Obamas have two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and remain one of the most admired power couples in modern politics.
