Grand Anse (Grenada): The husband of a North Carolina woman who disappeared while swimming off Grenada's Grand Anse Beach has said he does not believe foul play was involved, even as the search for the missing tourist entered its second week.

Elizabeth "Liz" Waddell, 44, vanished on July 22 while vacationing on the Caribbean island with a friend. Despite extensive search efforts by local authorities, volunteers and US officials, the physical therapist remains missing.

In a statement posted on FindLiz.com, a website created to coordinate the search, her husband Cailen Waddell said the family had reached its conclusion after consulting investigators and officials.

"Despite our exhaustive efforts, we have not been successful," he wrote.

"After careful and thoughtful consultation with family, local authorities, the U.S. Embassy, and others here in Grenada, I join authorities in believing there was no foul play."

Family retraces final known movements

According to the family, Waddell was last seen swimming in the waters near Grand Anse Beach.

"Liz was last seen swimming in the ocean near Grand Anse, around 5:30 PM, far from shore. She communicated her confidence in her swimming and location, as well as the beauty of the island."

Her family also released surveillance footage documenting her final known movements. The video shows Waddell walking through the backyard of the Airbnb where she was staying at 11:45 a.m. on July 22 before entering the sea two minutes later.

At 11:53 a.m., her friend was seen adjusting a beach chair before returning inside the property, reportedly to attend an online course.

The footage shows Waddell swimming toward Grand Anse Beach at approximately 12:04 p.m. before disappearing from the camera's view. About 40 minutes later, her friend walked toward a nearby jetty but returned alone.

When Waddell failed to return, she was reported missing at around 5:50 p.m.

Search continues despite family's return home

Although some family members are preparing to return to the United States, Cailen Waddell stressed that efforts to locate his wife have not ended.

He thanked Grenadian authorities, emergency responders and volunteers for their continued assistance, describing their efforts as "compassionate and tireless."

Friends say Waddell has always been passionate about exploring new places and embracing outdoor adventures.

"Liz has the adventure bug. She loves to travel, and there’s not a hike she didn’t like that she wanted to try," family friend Amanda Romano-Harmon told WRAL.

"She’s a ray of sunshine, and she just she loves to meet new people and experience different cultures and see what the world has to offer. She’s a great friend."
