New York: British author Neil Gaiman is once again facing allegations of sexual assault. A recent article published in New York Magazine, titled 'There Is No Safe Word', brings forward accusations from eight women who claim to have been assaulted by the acclaimed writer. Among these women is a former nanny who worked for Gaiman and his second wife, Amanda Palmer.
The nanny, who had been hired to care for the couple's child, alleges that Gaiman sexually assaulted her in February 2022 in a bathtub at their New Zealand home. She further claims she was also assaulted in a hotel room while caring for Gaiman’s child. The nanny said Gaiman would often demand that she refer to him as "master" and "be a good girl."
The article also reveals that many of the women who have accused Gaiman were young, with most of them in their late teens or early twenties at the time of the alleged incidents. Gaiman, now in his fifties, was reportedly in his forties when the assaults are said to have occurred.
This follows previous allegations made against Gaiman in July 2024, when five women came forward with accusations of sexual assault. These claims were part of a six-part podcast series titled 'Master', produced by Tortoise Media.
In response to the growing number of allegations, fellow author J.K. Rowling spoke out against Gaiman on social media, expressing her disappointment in the literary community's muted response.
In a tweet, she compared the situation to that of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who was convicted after numerous women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. Rowling questioned why the literary world had not spoken up as loudly about the accusations against Gaiman.
Rowling's tweet read: "The literary crowd that had a hell of a lot to say about Harvey Weinstein before he was convicted has been strangely muted in its response to multiple accusations against Neil Gaiman from young women who'd never met, yet - as with Weinstein - tell remarkably similar stories."
