Middle East oil refineries in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait hit by drone strikes. Read our analysis on the impact to global energy markets and supply chains today.

The stability of the global energy market is under threat following a coordinated wave of attacks on vital infrastructure across the Middle East.
On Thursday, Saudi officials confirmed that a drone struck the Samref oil refinery in Yanbu, a strategic Red Sea port city. This incident is part of a broader, alarming escalation that has simultaneously targeted energy assets in Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Samref refinery, a high-capacity joint venture between Saudi Aramco and ExxonMobil, is a cornerstone of the world’s petroleum supply chain. Located in Yanbu, it serves as a critical export hub, especially as regional tensions complicate shipping routes through the Persian Gulf.
While Saudi authorities are currently conducting a damage assessment, the strike has already sent ripples through energy trading desks.
Kuwait’s Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery hit by a drone
In a nearly simultaneous strike, a drone targeted an operational unit at the Mina Al-Ahmadi oil refinery in Kuwait. The attack ignited a fire at the facility, which is located approximately 40 kilometers south of Kuwait City. The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) reported that emergency response teams acted with precision to contain the blaze.
This facility is one of the region's largest, with a refining capacity of 730,000 barrels per day, making its safety vital to Kuwait’s economy.
The timing of these strikes suggests a systemic effort to destabilise the region’s energy network. Beyond Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, hostile actions have been reported at energy sites in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates within the last 24 hours.
Earlier today, the Kuwaiti armed forces confirmed that their air defence systems were actively engaged in intercepting a barrage of "hostile missiles and drones," highlighting the volatile atmosphere currently gripping West Asia.
