Kuwait City: A drone attack triggered a fire at a major oil sector complex in Kuwait early Sunday, raising fresh concerns over regional security as tensions in the Gulf continue to escalate.

According to the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, the blaze broke out at the Shuwaikh oil sector complex, which houses the oil ministry and KPC headquarters. The incident was reported by the Kuwait News Agency.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, while emergency and firefighting teams rushed to the scene to contain the flames and prevent further damage to critical energy infrastructure.

Amid the incident, Kuwait’s military confirmed that its air defence systems were engaged in intercepting incoming threats.

“The Kuwaiti air defenses are currently confronting hostile missile and drone attacks,” the army said in a statement on X, noting that explosions heard across the region were due to successful interceptions.

Drone strike damages government building

In a related development, an earlier Iranian drone strike on Saturday evening caused significant damage to a government building in Kuwait City, according to the finance ministry. No casualties were reported in that attack either.

As a precaution, authorities announced that staff from multiple ministries located in the affected complex would work remotely on Sunday, and public visits have been temporarily suspended, reported AFP.

The attacks come amid a widening regional conflict, with Iran targeting Gulf states, including Kuwait, in retaliation for strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28.
