Governor Beshear called it an isolated incident, emphasizing that violence has no place in the commonwealth.

Frankfort: At least one student died, and another suffered critical injuries in a shooting at Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall residence hall on the Kentucky State University campus on Tuesday, with authorities taking a suspect into custody.
Frankfort police locked down the campus after responding to an "active aggressor" incident, as video footage showed multiple police vehicles surrounding dormitories and crime scene tape in a courtyard.
The surviving student remains in stable but critical condition, and the university withheld the victim's name while offering counselling and support services. "We are in close contact with the families and are providing every available support to them," the school stated.
Gov. Andy Beshear described the shooting as "an isolated incident" with no ongoing threat, urging prayers for affected families and KSU students. "Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country," he said on X.
This marks the second shooting near Young Hall in four months; gunfire from a vehicle on Aug. 17 wounded two non-students, one seriously, damaging the dorm and a vehicle. Kentucky State, a historically Black public university with about 2,200 students, founded in 1886, lies roughly 2 miles east of the state Capitol.
