Tehran: The Iranian government has declared a 40-day period of national mourning and a week of public holidays following the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The announcement, carried by the state media Fars News Agency and other state-run outlets on Sunday, officially acknowledges the end of the 86-year-old cleric's nearly four-decade rule. While the state broadcaster confirmed the "martyrdom" of the Revolutionary Leader, it notably omitted specific details regarding the circumstances of his death or the extent of the damage to his heavily fortified compound in central Tehran.

The Fars agency reported that the government has declared 40 days of public mourning following Khamenei’s assassination. It also announced seven days of public holidays, as confirmed by the state dispatch.

A Nation in Stasis

The declaration of the Arba'een, the traditional 40-day mourning cycle in Shiite Islam, effectively brings the nation to a standstill as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the clerical establishment navigate a sudden and volatile leadership vacuum.

  • National Shutdown: The seven-day public holiday will see the closure of all government offices, schools, and the Tehran Stock Exchange.
  • Security Lockdown: Despite the period of mourning, the IRGC has maintained a "maximum alert" status across major cities to prevent a resurgence of the nationwide protests that have recently challenged the theocracy's grip on power.
  • Retaliatory Tone: State media accompanied the mourning announcement with patriotic anthems and calls for "unforgettable revenge" against the United States and Israel.

The lack of detail surrounding the Supreme Leader's death has fueled intense speculation within Iran and abroad. Satellite imagery released earlier by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) showed significant destruction at the "Leadership House" compound, suggesting the use of high-precision, bunker-busting munitions.

With no publicly designated successor, the 40-day period is expected to serve as a critical window for the Supreme National Security Council, currently led by Ali Larijani, to consolidate power and prevent a total collapse of the governing structure.

The United Nations has urged "maximum restraint" during the mourning period, as Iranian-backed proxies across Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen have also declared their own periods of mourning and signalled potential escalations in the regional conflict.
