Paris: A fighter jet crashed in eastern France, leaving at least one individual dead, the French armed forces reported on Wednesday.

The Mirage 2000D combat aircraft was making its return from a mission when it went down late Tuesday evening, according to the armed forces ministry.

The military aircraft was crewed by a fighter pilot alongside a weapons systems officer from the French Air and Space Force. Search teams have retrieved one body, while operations remain underway to locate the second crew member.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The Mirage 2000D is a twin-seat aircraft that specialises in ground-attack operations and is engineered to operate within complex combat environments, the ministry noted.

The model is routinely deployed in support of conventional air missions and strategic power-projection operations.
