Two loud explosions rocked Jalalabad city in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday morning, an AFP journalist reported, heightening tensions a day after Pakistani air strikes targeted other Afghan cities.

The blasts were heard shortly after a jet was spotted flying overhead, with the explosions appearing to originate from the direction of the airport in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.  

The city lies along the strategic highway connecting Kabul to the Pakistan border, making it a critical transit and security hub.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and authorities had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting. However, the incident comes amid escalating tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan following cross-border military actions.

On Friday, Pakistani air strikes reportedly hit multiple locations inside Afghanistan, targeting what Islamabad described as militant hideouts. Afghan officials have previously condemned such operations as violations of sovereignty, warning of consequences.

The latest explosions in Jalalabad are likely to further strain already fragile relations between the two neighbours. Security has been tightened in key eastern provinces, with residents expressing concern over the potential for renewed cross-border confrontation in the volatile frontier region.
