The collision occurred in the al-Ayyat district of Giza province, roughly 52 kilometres south of Cairo, when a train bound for the southwestern Fayoum province struck the rear of a train travelling to the southern province of Aswan, according to the Transportation Ministry. One of the trains derailed during the impact, though officials did not specify which one.

The Health Ministry confirmed that at least four people died and 88 others sustained injuries. The wounded were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi stated in a social media post that he has ordered a swift investigation into the collision to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Emergency crews and heavy cranes were deployed to the location to clear the wreckage and resume normal rail services as quickly as possible, the Egyptian Railway Authority said.

In September last year, a train driver and his assistant were injured when two freight trains collided in the same district.
