Ottawa: Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed Thursday that a Canadian citizen has died at the hands of Iranian authorities, a death she attributed to the regime's "draconian" response to a weeks-long national uprising.

In a social media statement, Anand did not provide the victim's name or specific details regarding the timing or location of the death, citing privacy considerations. However, she linked the fatality directly to the ongoing lethal crackdown against demonstrators who have flooded the streets since late December.

"Peaceful protests by the Iranian people — asking that their voices be heard in the face of the Iranian regime's repression and ongoing human rights violations — has led the regime to flagrantly disregard human life," Anand wrote.
