
Muscat: Nine people, including an Indian national, were killed in a shooting incident in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on Monday night. Another Indian was also injured in the incident, but further details about them have not been released.
The shooting happened near a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area of Muscat Governorate. Among the dead are five civilians, one policeman, and three assailants. Furthermore, 28 people were injured, including four members of the Royal Oman Police, Civil Defense, and Ambulance Authority. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The Royal Oman Police have stated that investigations into the violence are ongoing. They expressed their condolences to the victims and their families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The Royal Oman Police also extended their gratitude to the public for their cooperation during this time.
The shooting occurred on the eve of Ashoura, a remembrance of the 7th century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein, that gave birth to their faith. The day falls in the Islamic month of Muharram, one of the holiest months for Shiite Muslims.
