Mumbai: Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty fell sharply in early trade on Tuesday as rising crude oil prices and continued foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiment amid uncertainty over the situation in West Asia.
The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 503 points to 72,260.09 in early trading, while the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 151 points to 22,626.50.

Among the Sensex constituents, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints and Infosys were among the major losers. Sun Pharma, InterGlobe Aviation and Adani Ports were among the stocks trading higher.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was up 1.74 per cent at $107.10 a barrel.
“Indian equity markets are expected to remain under pressure as elevated crude oil prices and persistent uncertainty over the US-Iran conflict weigh on market sentiment,” said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, a SEBI-registered online trading and wealth-tech firm.
He said uncertainty surrounding negotiations and concerns over possible disruptions to oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz continued to weigh on market sentiment.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth ₹5,353.22 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.
Asian markets also remained subdued on Tuesday. South Korea’s KOSPI, Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng traded lower, while the Shanghai SSE Composite index was marginally higher.
US markets ended lower on Monday.
The domestic benchmark indices had also suffered a sharp decline in the previous session. The Sensex plunged 1,124.02 points, or 1.52 per cent, to close at 72,771.72, its lowest closing level since March 30, 2026. The Nifty fell 360.25 points, or 1.56 per cent, to settle at 22,780.25.
