Kochi: Families of deceased Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) members are receiving insurance benefits faster, with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) now disbursing claims within three days of receiving applications from nominees.

The quicker settlement comes as the organisation shifts to digital processing, reducing the time taken to clear insurance claims. Although the prescribed deadline for disbursing benefits is 20 days, claims are now being settled much sooner.

Since April this year, the EPFO has processed 260 insurance claims and paid a total of ₹6.52 crore to beneficiaries. During the 2025–26 financial year, it settled 882 claims, disbursing ₹22.56 crore.

EPFO insurance benefits for deceased members

Under the Deposit Linked Insurance (DLI) scheme, eligible PF members have insurance coverage ranging from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹7 lakh. Members who die within their first year of membership are entitled to a minimum insurance benefit of ₹50,000.

The scheme offers financial assistance to the families of employees who die while in service.

The Union Labour Ministry notified a new Deposit Linked Insurance scheme on June 29 this year as part of the implementation of the new labour codes.

The new scheme replaces the earlier version introduced in 1976 and operates under the Code on Social Security, 2020.
