Mumbai, March 21: In a major administrative move aimed at improving efficiency in food distribution, the Centre has announced that ration card holders across India will receive a three-month supply of food grains in April 2026.

The distribution, covering April, May and June, will be carried out in a single phase through fair price shops under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Bulk distribution to ease access and logistics

The decision is designed to simplify the delivery process and reduce the frequency of visits beneficiaries need to make to ration shops.

Instead of collecting grains every month, eligible households will be able to lift their full three-month quota in one go, offering greater flexibility and convenience.

Officials said the move is expected to benefit millions of families who depend on subsidised wheat and rice for their daily needs. Beneficiaries will be allowed to collect their allocation within a specified window, enabling them to plan their visits according to their convenience.

Linked to procurement cycle, states asked to prepare

While no formal explanation has been issued, the bulk distribution is understood to be aligned with the upcoming wheat procurement season. By clearing existing stock from warehouses in advance, the government aims to make room for fresh arrivals and maintain a smooth supply chain.

States had earlier been directed to lift food grains from central reserves ahead of time. They are now responsible for ensuring seamless distribution at the ground level, including informing beneficiaries about schedules and preventing overcrowding at ration outlets.

Digitisation strengthens delivery, cuts leakages

The Centre also highlighted improvements in the PDS driven by technology adoption. The use of electronic Point of Sale (ePOS) devices and Aadhaar-based authentication has significantly increased transparency and accountability in the system.

According to officials, over 99% of beneficiaries are now Aadhaar-linked, helping plug leakages and ensure targeted delivery of subsidies. Verification drives conducted in 2025 led to the cancellation of over 41 lakh ineligible ration cards, further streamlining the system.

The bulk distribution is expected to bring both financial and logistical relief to low-income households, particularly in rural and urban poor segments. However, authorities have cautioned states to closely monitor implementation to avoid delays or disruptions.

Beneficiaries have been advised to stay in touch with local ration offices for updates on collection timelines.
