Kozhikode: To promote safe driving practices, the Young Indians (Yi) Kozhikode chapter will host the "Road Safety Awareness Marathon 2025" in the city on February 1.

Organized in collaboration with the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and RTO, the marathon will kick off at 6:30 a.m. from Malabar Christian College Ground.

This event is part of a year-long campaign led by the Kozhikode chapter of the non-profit organization, Young Indians. According to the organizers, the campaign primarily focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving and encouraging safer driving habits.

According to data released by the Motor Vehicles Department, Kerala recorded a total of 3,714 road accident-related deaths in 2024. Additionally, official figures show that 50,290 people were injured in 44,938 accidents reported in the state until November last year.

"We are observing the last week of January as Road Safety Week. As part of the initiative, we are launching the main campaign and organizing a rally in Kozhikode on February 1, in collaboration with the RTO, MVD, and the District Collectorate. Additionally, we are hosting a car rally in partnership with various car manufacturers to spread the safety message. Over 1,500 students will participate in the rally. Lastly, we are conducting a training program in schools called 'Chotta Cop,' aimed at teaching road safety rules to students," the organizers said.
