Munnar: In a progressive move aimed at promoting safe and affordable travel for women, Kerala's Idukki district has completed the construction of its first-ever all-women lodge, set against the picturesque backdrop of Munnar’s mist-covered tea plantations. The facility, known as a "She Lodge", has been built under the leadership of the Pallivasal Grama Panchayat, and is expected to be inaugurated by the end of August, officials confirmed.

Strategically located at Second Mile, near the Pallivasal Panchayat Office, the lodge was developed at a cost of ₹1.25 crore, sourced entirely from the panchayat’s own project funds. It holds the distinction of being the first She Lodge in the state initiated and executed solely by a local body.

The initiative was conceived to provide secure, hygienic, and budget-friendly accommodation for solo and group female travellers visiting Munnar — a popular hill station in Kerala’s Western Ghats. Construction began in March 2022, with the aim of addressing a growing need for women-only facilities in tourist areas.

The lodge features eight private rooms, a dormitory that can accommodate 16 guests, along with essential amenities including a restaurant and kitchen. The building faces the scenic Chithirapuram tea estates, offering guests uninterrupted views of Munnar’s natural beauty.

Authorities hope the lodge will enhance Munnar’s appeal as a safe and welcoming destination for women travellers, while also setting a model for other regions in the state and across India.
