Thamarassery: Reports say that over 55 lives have been lost in the state due to the attack of wild boars. 1484 people were injured either by being charged into by boars or by being toppled over, sometimes in broad daylight. This is the figure between 2019- October 31, 2023 in the state.
Wild boars roam human-inhabited areas both during the day and night. Some recent events are:
Mani Mathai, a tapper from Palakkad, Balan from Kozhikode, and Keelath Abdusalam from Muringumpurai were killed in wild boar attacks that happened during the day.
Muhammad Ali died in Malappuram after a wild boar hit his scooter while riding on the national highway.
Rasheed died when a wild boar collided with his car, causing him to lose control. The car fell downhill from the roadside.
Compensation on paper
In case of attack by wild boars, assistance is provided from the Wildlife Attack Compensation Fund. However, due to inadequate funds and technicalities, more than half of the victims do not receive timely compensation.
