According to an official statement, the move reflects a significant expansion of the department's mandate beyond conventional electronics and information technology.

The Government of Keralam has officially renamed its Electronics and Information Technology Department as the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Future Technologies. Issued on Saturday, October 3, following a recent cabinet decision, the official Government Order formalises a structural shift in how the state manages cutting-edge technologies. According to an official statement, the move reflects a significant expansion of the department's mandate beyond conventional electronics and information technology.
An expanded mandate for emerging industries
Over recent decades, the department played a central role in building Keralam's technology ecosystem through the establishment of flagship hubs such as Technopark, Infopark, and Cyberpark. These major IT parks helped drive employment opportunities, technology investments, and the steady growth of the state's Information Technology and IT-enabled Services (ITES) industry.
However, in recent years, Keralam's technology sector has moved decisively into emerging frontiers. These include artificial intelligence, electronics, semiconductors, quantum computing, blockchain, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, drones, space technologies, cloud computing, AVGC-XR (animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality), graphene, and advanced materials. The department has also been deeply involved in supporting startups, deep-technology ventures, and technology-led innovation. Giving formal recognition to this broadened role enables Keralam to respond more effectively to fast-moving developments across the global technology landscape.
Strengthening governance and public infrastructure
The structural realignment highlights the state's commitment to responsible innovation, digital transformation, digital public infrastructure (DPI), knowledge-based industries, and future-ready governance. The update follows an announcement made in the Governor's Policy Address for 2026 regarding the repositioning of the department to match the state's long-term technology vision.
While continuing to function as the primary nodal agency for technology-led development, the department will sharpen its focus on artificial intelligence, future technologies, digital public infrastructure, deep-tech innovation, and knowledge-led economic growth. Furthermore, as part of the state government's 100 Days Programme, several key institutional reforms are currently underway, including the creation of the Kerala State Digital Technology Mission, The Future Corporation, and Semicon Keralam. These initiatives aim to strengthen Keralam's digital governance architecture, future technology capabilities, semiconductor ecosystem, and knowledge industry base. The General Administration Department will carry out the necessary amendments in the Rules of Business of the Government of Keralam to operationalise these updates.
Building on May's pioneer AI cabinet portfolio
Saturday's departmental overhaul continues momentum generated in May 2026, when Kerala became the first state in India to create a dedicated Artificial Intelligence portfolio after the formation of the new United Democratic Front (UDF) government. Tamil Nadu subsequently followed with a similar step during its own cabinet portfolio allocation, marking a wider shift in how Indian state governments organise administrative duties around emerging technologies.
The AI portfolio was introduced as part of a wider reshuffle of ministerial responsibilities after the UDF administration took office. Under a state Gazette order, the AI portfolio was placed under the Industries and Commerce department alongside Information Technology. Senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader PK Kunhalikutty was given charge of Industries and Commerce, Information Technology, and the new Artificial Intelligence portfolio, alongside startups, mining and geology, handlooms, and textiles.
