Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the Wayanad tunnel road construction can proceed as soon as approval is granted.

He was responding to MLA Linto Joseph's query in the state Assembly about the commencement of construction. The MLA highlighted that preparatory stages, including land acquisition, are underway.

The entire state is anticipating the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi tunnel which is a significant project, the Chief Minister said.

Notably, a Norwegian expert team inspected the Maripuzha site, the tunnel's starting point, in November last year. The team, headed by Dr Dominik Lang of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute affirmed the feasibility of the tunnel project.

They are equipped with technology capable of understanding rock formations up to seven kilometre below the surface.

Spanning 22 kilometres, the tunnel construction will be taken up by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited. With an estimated construction period of three years, the project can soon become a reality, said the chief minister.
