Two marks of the premolar teeth of the tiger were spotted on the backside of his right thigh. His femur was broken. A heavy blow to the chest caused internal bleeding. This, along with blood loss from the wounds led to a heart attack and eventually to death, Dr VK Rajeevan said.

Thomas had spoken to his wife and others who accompanied him in the ambulance while taking him to Wayanad Medical College Hospital.

He was survived by his wife Sini, children Sona and Sojan.

Search operation underway

The tiger was first spotted by MGNREGA workers in the morning. They informed forest officials and the search was immediately started. Thomas was attacked while the search was ongoing. Deputy collector and tehsildar arrived at the location to coordinate the search operation.

The area is not close to the forest and this has caused panic among the natives since the presence of a tiger was not expected in the locality.

A couple of weeks ago, a tiger located in Vakeri village was found dead. In October 2022, another tiger spread fear for almost a month in the Cheeral area. It had attacked several domestic animals.
