Water shocker: Noted Kerala writer gets whopping Rs 70,000 bill
Thiruvananthapuram: Have you ever received a shocker of a water bill for the drinking water connection from the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) ? If not, get ready for such a shocker soon as there are widespread complaints that consumers get exorbitant water bills which have no relation to what they consume actually.
This has come to daylight, after a well-known writer, who lives in a rented house at Vazhuthakkad in Thiruvananthapuram, received a water bill of Rs 70,000 all of a sudden. Earlier bills were below Rs 50 and he has no clue as to how such a shocking bill has been sent to him. Mathrubhumi.com is in possession of the bill the writer received. The writer, who does not want to be named, has already filed a complaint to the concerned officials of KWA.
The Minister for Water Resources, Roshy Augustine, is all set to issue an order for comprehensive review across the state on the growing complaints in this regard from the nook and corner of the state.
“I will definitely look into the matter and it will be resolved. So far, nothing has come to my attention on exorbitant water bills. I think that the issue demands a comprehensive study,” said the minister.
In the meantime, KWA Assistant Engineer (Palayam section), Sagi Samlal, told Mathrubhumi.com that a team will visit the writer’s house tomorrow to rectify the issue.
According to the concerned officials, KWA gets nearly 25 complaints on an average per day over exorbitant water bills. “Most of the issues arise due to water leaking or erratic meters. We rectify the issues as soon as we clear it,” said an official of KWA.
The official also admitted that there were some issues with the billing due to Covid-19 lockdown. “The water bills of April and May were calculated on the basis of previous bills as visiting houses for meter reading was not possible due to Covid-19 lockdown. Later, many have complained that they got huge bills in the months of June, July and all. We have been clearing all complaints on war footing.”
