When Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany met BJP leaders
Kannur: Thalassery Archdiocese Bishop Mar Joseph Pamplany’s controversial statement favouring Bharatiya Janata Party came after his meeting with a few BJP leaders. The BJP activists had met Pamplany at the Bishop House last Tuesday. Following this, the bishop assured to vote for BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, if the Centre raised the support price for rubber to Rs 300 per kilogram. The statement which irked Congress and CPM was delivered while addressing a protest rally of Catholic Congress in Kannur.
BJP district president N Haridas, Minority Morcha district president Arun Thomas and a few others had met the bishop last Tuesday. BJP leaders said that the bishop had praised Minority Morcha’s involvement in curbing the social menaces such as Love Jihad.
On Sunday, the bishop had ruled out allegations that his statement was an outcome of a pact between church and BJP. He said that the decision was taken after holding discussions with the rubber farmers in the high range. However, he did not reveal anything regarding his meeting with BJP leaders.
BJP state president K Surendran welcomed the bishop’s statement and commented that all the communities in Kerala have set faith on Narendra Modi’s promise that the NDA alliance will come to power in the state following the path of Northeast states.
