Thrissur: The Thrissur City Police recently busted a fraud attempt by a scammer who posed as a Mumbai Police officer. The incident gained attention on social media after the fraudster unwittingly made a video call to the Thrissur Police. 

The scammer, dressed in a police uniform, introduced himself as an officer from Mumbai. However, as soon as the Thrissur Cyber Cell officer turned on the camera, the scammer realised he was actually speaking to the police. 

The video, shared by the Thrissur City Police on Tuesday, has gone viral, garnering over 162,000 views and 7,600 likes. The reel captioned in Malayalam shows the scammer’s surprised expression upon discovering he was speaking with the police.

The humorous twist on the police encounter resonated with viewers, who flooded the comments with praise for the officers. One comment read, “Well done, police,” while another quipped, “Le thief: Oh sir, it was a prank video call... Look over there, there’s a camera.” A viewer humorously noted, “This is the first time a thief is laughing when caught by the police.” 

Thrissur Police used the video to remind viewers of the dangers of cyber fraud and urged anyone who has been a victim of cybercrime to report it immediately by calling the helpline number 1930.
