Kozhikode: Machattu Vasanthi, a pioneering singer in the realm of theatre and cinema, passed away at the age of 81. She breathed her last at the Kozhikode Medical College on Sunday night.

Vasanthi first gained attention at the tender age of 13 with her rendition of the popular song "Pachappanamthathe..". Renowned music director Baburaj was instrumental in introducing her to the film industry. Vasanthi was daughter of the revolutionary singer and radio artist Machattu Krishnan.

In her early career, she made considerable contributions to numerous theatrical productions and lent her voice to various songs on All India Radio. Her popularity soared with the song "Manimaaran thannathu panamalla ponnu alla… Madhurakkinavinte karimpundhottam…" from the film "Olavum Theeravum," which she performed alongside the legendary K.J. Yesudas, also composed by Baburaj.

Vasanthi’s contributions also include the tracks "Thathammey Thathammey nee paadiyal athippazham thanidum…" and "Aaru chollidum aaru chollidum…" from Ramu Kariat's film "Minnaminungu," both of which were set to music by Baburaj.

Her death marks the end of an era in the rich tapestry of Malayalam music and theatre, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.
