Kerala CM V D Satheesan criticised Rahul Gandhi’s detention during the NEET protest, calling the police action an attack on democratic rights and constitutional values.
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has strongly criticised the police action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition MPs during their protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi.
Satheesan said the detention of elected representatives who were protesting over student issues and alleged irregularities in the education sector was a serious concern for democracy.

In a statement shared on social media, Satheesan wrote: “Strongly condemn the high-handed and brutal police action against Leader of Opposition Shri @RahulGandhi ji, AICC General Secretaries Smt @priyankagandhi ji and other senior leaders and Opposition MPs in New Delhi.”
Calls action an attack on democratic rights
The Kerala CM alleged that the physical removal and detention of opposition leaders during a peaceful protest reflected an attempt to suppress voices against the government.
He said: “The physical assault and forcible detention of elected representatives peacefully protesting against widespread irregularities in the country’s education sector is a blatant attack on democratic values and constitutional rights.”
Satheesan further accused the government of using pressure tactics against opposition voices.
“Suppressing opposition voices through sheer intimidation and state force is a dangerous fascist tactic that threatens the very core of our democracy.”
Satheesan urged the Union government to immediately release the detained leaders and respect citizens’ right to peaceful protest.
He said: “The Union Government must immediately release all detained leaders and respect the fundamental right to peaceful protest.”
Rahul Gandhi protest over NEET row
The remarks came after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition leaders staged a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence over the NEET controversy and alleged police action against student protesters.
The Congress has demanded accountability over the handling of student protests and has sought action against Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The Centre, however, accused Rahul Gandhi of changing his demands during discussions and said it was ready to discuss NEET-related issues in Parliament.
