Kochi: In a significant development, a Vatican court has absolved cardinal Mar George Alencherry of any personal benefit in the land deal involving properties of Ernakulam-Angamaly
archdiocese. The court has granted permission for the sale of land in Kottapadi and Devikulam to offset the loss incurred by the Syro-Malabar Church.
The order was issued to Mar Andrews Thazhath, the Apostolic Administrator of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, by the Vatican, which also emphasised his authority to proceed with the land sale. Any objections to the sale may result in prosecution under canon law. This clearance empowers the Apostolic Administrator to take action against a section of priests and believers of the diocese.

It is noteworthy that cardinal's plea to quash the cases of alleged irregularities in the land sale had been rejected by the Supreme Court of India. The state government had supported his stance in the Supreme Court.
