Kochi: The Kerala high court directed officials to brief the investigation details of unnatural deaths to the kin of the deceased. As per the order, from now on, once the police executive magistrate closes the case, near kin of the deceased will be called in for a briefing on the incident. Investigations on unnatural deaths are mostly wrapped up, if there isn't conclusive proof for any foul play.

However, there was no rule until now stipulating officials to brief investigation details to the kin of deceased, incase of unnatural deaths. This often left them clueless on the death of their dear ones, and stopped them from pushing for further investigations. The order issued by justice K Babu is expected to put an end to the ordeal. 

The court issued the order while considering a petition filed by Vazhayur resident Krishnan on the suicide of his daughter at her in-laws’ house. The bereaved father had alleged foul play in the incident which happened on November 25, 2021. A complaint was also registered against the woman’s husband before her death for domestic violence. The court had also appointed advocates Renjith B Marar and John S Ralph as amicus curiae in the case. 

But, the executive magistrate, in adherence to the police report, settled the case for good after launching a preliminary investigation into the incident. The distressed girl’s relatives were left in the dark, without any proper explanation.

In the context, the high court has also instructed the crime branch to launch a fresh investigation into the girl’s suicide.
