Kozhikode: The corporation authority here on Saturday suspended 15 UDF councillors for allegedly protesting during the meeting which convened to discuss the Punjab National Bank scam.

On Saturday, UDF and BJP moved an adjournment motion in the council meeting which summoned to discuss the financial fraud in Punjab National Bank. Over Rs. 12 crore was reportedly swindled from the accounts of Kozhikode Corporation.

During the meeting, the opposition led by UDF and BJP moved an adjournment motion demanding a CBI probe into the scam. A ruckus broke out in the corporation council meeting after the ruling LDF denied permission for the adjournment motion. Following this, opposition members protested despite Mayor Beena Philip intervening.

LDF and UDF councillors shouted at each other and raised banners in the meeting. Following these events, the authority decided to suspend 15 councillors for a day.

Mayor Beena Philip said that corporation filed a formal complaint with the RBI and Prime Minister's office. She added that the corporation will welcome investigations under any agency including CBI into the scam.
