The final decision on these matters will depend on discussions with the allied parties

Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF Cabinet led by VD Satheesan is expected to be finalised by Saturday. Bilateral talks with coalition partners have begun at the Cantonment House in Thiruvananthapuram, where decisions regarding ministerial berths will be taken. The Congress is set to get 11 ministerial posts along with the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions.
The Kerala Congress (Joseph faction) is demanding two minister berths, but the Congress is unlikely to yield. The party’s plan is to allot only one position.
If that is the case, the Joseph faction is seeking the Revenue portfolio. Earlier, there were also discussions about offering the Chief Whip post instead of an additional ministerial berth. However, amid the government’s financial constraints, the Congress is now debating internally whether the Chief Whip position is necessary or not.
The final decision on these matters will depend on discussions with the allied parties. Congress has currently decided to ensure ministerial representation for all allies. Today’s talks are expected to determine which portfolios will be allotted to them.
The CMP is seeking the Ports portfolio. Though the RSP has not demanded a specific department, it is insisting on a major portfolio. It remains to be seen whether Congress will agree to hand over the departments sought by its allies. The party’s aim is to avoid prolonged negotiations and arrive at a decision as quickly as possible.
