Malappuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which declined the CPM’s invitation to take part in the seminar against Uniform Civil Code (UCC), termed the latter’s move “malicious” and asked why they did not invite other constituent parties of the UDF, even though the issue was not one affecting Muslims alone.
In a veiled criticism, IUML national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty said, “What’s happening here should not turn into divisive seminars. Or else it will be like aiding the BJP.”

As other Muslim organisations, including the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, are planning to take part in the seminar, the League has decided not to entirely condemn the move. The measures to raise UCC as an issue that affects only the Muslims should be opposed, League said.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the current scenario, the IUML meeting also decided to organise a ‘model’ seminar, led by Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, in Kozhikode to override the CPM move.
All secular organisations, regardless of the fronts, will be invited to the seminar and it will set an example, League leaders said.
Earlier the day, Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal asserted that only IUML was invited by the CPM to participate in the seminar and all other constituent parties were left out.
“In the wake of the current political scenario, the League cannot attend the seminar,” he added.
