Kozhikode: A tree fell onto a moving car on the Thamarassery Ghat Road on Thursday morning, injuring the inmates, including a child. The accident occurred near the sixth hairpin bend.

The injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital. None of the injuries are reported to be serious.

The vehicle involved was a taxi Innova. A major tragedy was averted as the tree fell on the roof above the third-row seats. However, the rear portion of the vehicle was completely crushed.

Traffic, which came to a standstill following the accident, was restored only after prolonged efforts. Fire and Rescue Services from Kalpetta, volunteers from the ghat area, Highway Police, and local motorists together cleared the road. The fallen tree was cut and removed, and the damaged car was taken away from the spot.

The incident caused a long traffic jam, and a queue of vehicles continues to build up along the ghat road. Traffic is expected to return to normal once the stranded vehicles are cleared.

Heavy rain has continued to lash the Thamarassery Ghat over the past few days. The stretch had also witnessed severe traffic congestion around midnight on Wednesday.
