Madurai tourist rescued after falling into Idukki’s Thooval waterfall while attempting to take a selfie

Thooval (Idukki): A tourist from Madurai narrowly escaped tragedy after slipping into the Thooval Waterfalls while trying to take a selfie. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, when the man, part of a group of four, was swept away by the current and became trapped on a pile of rocks.
Eyewitnesses reported that the group was capturing selfies when one of them lost his footing and fell into the water. The man, who had been carried away by the current, was trapped between rocks.
After the man and nearby tourists raised an alarm, locals rushed in with ropes and gear to rescue him. With the help of ropes, they managed to pull him up to safety.
Residents of the area have voiced concerns over the recurring accidents at the Thooval Waterfalls. Over the past decade, around 12 people have lost their lives in similar incidents. Two deaths were reported just last year.
Warning boards have been installed near the waterfall advising visitors not to approach the danger zone. However, many tourists ignore these signs and venture close to the water, often resulting in accidents.
Locals are calling for better safety measures, including the installation of barricades and protective walls, to prevent further mishaps.
