Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala chief secretary Tom Jose requested the public to remain indoors and avoid gatherings once the Janata Curfew concludes at 9 pm on Sunday.

“The police have been directed to take action against people venturing out of their homes and gathering around after 9 pm on Sunday,” said Tom Jose.

Violating the directive will be considered as an offence as per section 188 of IPC (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), he added.

To combat coronavirus, the state government had issued strict orders according to the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 to safeguard public health. District collectors and district police chiefs have been given powers according to section two of the Epidemic Diseases Act.

The Kasaragod district collector has been granted permission to announce complete prohibitory orders considering the special situation in the district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday night had called for the Janata Curfew to defeat the coronavirus pandemic. The curfew was announced from 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday.
