Riyadh: A woman from Tirur collapsed and died in Mecca during Haj pilgrimage. Fathima (66), wife of late Edassery Moosakutty, a native of Alingal, was the deceased. She collapsed while returning from Mina. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved. Fathima had gone for Haj last month through the Kerala State Haj Committee.

She is survived by children, Shamsuddin, Muhammad, Fauzia, Shihabuddin, and Ashiq, who reside in the UAE, and her grandchildren, Sabira, Laila, Umm Habiba, and Muhsina. 

This year, a total of 18,337 applications were approved for Haj pilgrimage from the state. 1250 applicants were aged over 70 years, and 3584 women applicants without ‘mahram’ were selected directly. As many as 11,942 applicants were selected through the lot. A total of 1551 people were chosen from the waiting list. 

Last year, a total of 11,556 pilgrims took Hajj from the state. The pilgrims, selected for Hajj 2024 by the State Hajj Committee, started their holy journey on May 26.
